Ever hear people using fancy web-talk. Well, here is your chance to get at par, or even ahead of the curve! Listed below are '8' exercises that staff can do on the Web to get familiar with the new web based technologies that are out there.

 

You will be surprised how easy it is, and what is even better, there are prizes to be won while you are doing the learning.

 

The following is an adaptation of the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County (PLCMC) 'Learning 2.0 program. I have adjusted the links to go to our own network for data storage. I have also gleaned the net and added definitions on our own page where necessary. I think people tend to remember buzzwords better it they know what the buzzwords stand for.

 Things you will learn about:

 

  • Week 1: Blogging - A Blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging"
  • Week 2: Photos & Images - Is about uploading images to the Internet.
  • Week 3: RSS & Newsreaders - Instead of the user browsing websites for information the information is sent directly to the user via RSS feed.
  • Week 4:Tagging - A tag is a keyword term assigned to a piece of information like picture, article, video clip describing the item
  • Week 5: Wikis - A Wiki is a sever based program that allows multiple users to contribute to a Web site.
  • Week 6: Online 'Office' tools (word processing, spreadsheet) etc.
  • Week 7: Podcasts, Video, Downloadable Audio - Podcasting is a method of publishing files to the Internet. These can be audio files also.
  • Week 8: Play Week - have fun!

 

Listed below are 8 small exercises that will take you through the learning process of what all the terms listed above really mean. Not only that, your will also be exposed to how people are using these tools to enhance their ability to express themselves via one of the most innovative tools of the century - The INTERNET.

    1- Set up your own blog & add your first post .

 

Week 2: Photos & Images Galore!

    2-Explore Flickr and learn about this popular image hosting site.

 

Week 3: RSS Feeds!

    3-Learn about RSS feeds and setup your own Bloglines.

 

Week 4: Tagging, Folksonomies & Technorati

    4-Learn about Learn about tagging and discover Del.icio.us (a social bookmaking site)

 

Week 5: Wikis!

    5-Learn about wikis and discover some innovative ways that libraries are using them.

Week 6: Online Applications & Tools! 

    6-Take a look at some online productivity (word processing, spreadsheet) tools.

 

Week 7: Podcasts, Video & Downloadable audio!

   7-Discover You tubes and a few sites that allow users to upload and share videos

   8-Take a look at the titles available on NC Live

 

Week 8: Play Week!

   9-Play around with an online image generator.
