Durham County Library Strategic Plan

 

Goal 1, Objective 1

 

Goal 1: The library is a customer-centered and welcoming place for the entire Durham community.

 

1.1:  By 6/30/10, 95% of library customers will report that they experience the physical facilities as clean, inviting, comfortable, properly-maintained, enviromentally friendly, safe, and accessible.

 

What are some strategies we have for this?

 

A.      By 6/30/08, plan and administer customer survey. By 6/30/09, implement strategies to improve at least halfway to accomplishment of the objective.  Review strategies and realign resources to accomplish the objectives by 6/30/10

 

B.       Develop merchandising plan, train staff, use shelving, slatwall, and display units that support it.  (See Goal 6)

 

C.       Develop facilities checklist and audit by 6/30/08. (See Goal 5)

 

D.      Train staff to be stewards of the facilities by 6/30/08. (See Goal 5.)

 

E.       Consider partnering with Wake County as a pilot to provide free reciprocal borrowing.  (Review UNC public policy study of reciprocal borrowing.)

 

F.       Review security resources and align them with the need.  (Place security staff only where needed, and train all staff in safety and security   procedures).

 

G.       Train staff to assist folks who are differently-abled, homeless, etc.

 

     a.        Work with community partners on solutions for homeless. 

 

     b.        Ensure that policies for eviction are behavior-based.

 

H.      Assess the needs of Durham County Libraries for equipment for disabled customers.

 

    a.      Create a checklist of equipment recommended by ALA’s Library Services for People with Disabilities Policy.

 

    b.     Submit the checklist  to the manager of each DCL facility.

 

I.      Obtain more money for renovation, upkeep, and beautification

 

     a.        Involve garden clubs and other volunteers

 

     b.       Improve lighting

 

     c.        Provide flexible space and furniture

 

I.       Assure regular and adequate maintenance (clean carpet and windows, etc.)

 

J.  Consider allocating 1% of library projects to public art (Board of Trustees to consider).

 

What has been working great for us?

 

50% completed : Auditing of library's compliance with ADA / ALA recommendations for serving disabled customers is begun with survey sent to all library managers.
